about

Sometimes I play it cool
And walk straight down the avenue,
With a backpack and a hat, and two old running shoes.

Sometimes I get down
And drive around.
Delivering coupons in three neighborhoods on the west side of town.

But everywhere I go I see your face
On the shoppers, and taxi drivers, and some of the babies.
Old lips, old eyes, creased since the start of time.

Sometimes on the weekend,
I drop my kids at home.
I go to the park, and sit an hour alone.

Sometimes on Sunday,
I’ll drive downtown,
And wait for the sunset to turn the streets brown.

And you know, when I say I need you, I really mean it.
You keep making the same mistakes over again,
You downtrodden, shuffling beast of the word, keep on!
